Today English is spoken globally across cultural and geographical boundaries. People from different cultural backgrounds speak different varieties of English. As the number of people who use English as a first language, a second language, or a foreign language increases, the number of varieties of English, especially in spoken English, inevitably increases. Therefore, much emphasis has been paid on English.
With China’s reform and opening-up, communication between China and other countries results in widespread teaching and learning of English in China. Nowadays, with a large population, it is not necessary for Chinese people to speak English like native people do. Owing to the fact that Chinese culture has been accepted by most of the countries, communicative failures can be reduced as few as possible between Chinese and foreigners. Although Chinese people do not follow the idiomatic way of English native speakers, they still can be understood by each other. However, this does not mean the use of China English will not cause communication breakdown, which, in many cases, results from a lack of intercultural understanding and negative transfer of mother tongue. The problem is inevitable and assignable, so does its influence.
As a bridge for communication between Chinese and foreigners, communication in English is becoming more and more important. By analyzing trigger types which cause communication difficulties, the communication shortcomings between Chinese college students can be covered, thus, English learners will be more confident when they communicate with foreigners. On the basis of this research, some references and enlightenment for the improvement of college ELT(English Language Teaching).
Although many researches on English interaction have been conducted by analyzing errors committed by English learners and revealing features at lexical level, tense level and so on, few research has been done on trigger types in Chinese college students’ English peer-peer interaction. Therefore, the present study will aim to analyze trigger from four types---Lexical, Morphosyntactic, Pronunciation and Global.
Based on the Conversation Analysis, the present study is to identify and investigate the trigger types of college English majors in peer-peer interaction, to give a reasonable explanation to the communication difficulties in the cross-culture interaction, and to reveal its implication for English teaching and learning. The findings of the research will help college students to improve their oral English, provide a reference for ELT and contribute to the study on trigger in peer-peer interaction.
