The Rainbow is a family chronicle relating the history of the Brangwen family of Marsh Farm in the Derbyshire-Nottinghamshire border. Tom Brangwen inherited his father’s farm. He married a foreign woman—Lydia. Although they got married, they didn’t know what other thought. Their marriage was full of the sense of distance. After several years, they accepted their differences, so they were satisfied with their life. Anna was the daughter of Lydia and her ex-husband. Anna married to Will. In the beginning of their marriage, they indulged to sex. However, they all had strong self-awareness, and no one wanted to give in. Therefore, their life was full of conflicts until Ursula’s birth. When Ursula was passing girlhood to womanhood, Ursula loved a soldier—Anton. But in the course of love, Ursula thought Anton lost his own will, which made Ursula hate. So she left Anton.
Women in love is The Rainbow’s companion piece. Ursula and Gudrun were the two heroines in Women in Love which tells their different love stories. Ursula was a teacher. She fell in love with Birkin. In their love, they had much conflict, but they made themselves closer in mind by communicating with each other. In the end, Ursula married to Birkin. However, the love of Gudrun doesn’t have a happy ending. Gudrun was an artist. She felled in love with Gerald. Gerald wanted to control Gudrun, but Gudrun fought against his dominance. Gudrun started feeling disappointed with Gerald. Gudrun fell in love with another man—Loerke. After Gudrun told him she would leave, Gerald came to the hollow basin of snow. Finally, he died.
