Chapter One Introduction
Clothing is an important part of people’s daily life, probably “the second skin” of human beings. Just like food and drink, it is essential for people. What we can see is the ever-changing clothing and people wear clothes according to the fashion trend. However, clothing reflects the most common form of visual communication. What’s more, clothes can not only reveal a nation’s material and spiritual civilization, but also reflect people’s mental and emotional activities. Clothing is one of people’s choices to build up their confidence and make themselves more beautiful. Thus, the demand of clothing is booming up. In the clothing sector ,many designers have contributed their ideas and suggestions to helping people match clothes such as the matching of colours, styles, size, shapes, and patterns. However, most people just focus only on these factors and they less concern or ignore the cultural aspects of clothing. In fact, it is imp ortant to know more about the culture of clothing. Especially, the clothing culture is influenced greatly by the Western and Chinese culture, and it has its own unique features, among which there are never lack of some interesting knowledge about clothes. It is worth to do researches on this topic. The aim of this paper is to find out the similarities and differences between Chinese and Western clothing culture. With regard to the comparative study of Chinese and the Western clothing culture, the relevant domestic monographs are relatively limited. Although some influential monographs and articles discussed the Chinese and the Western clothing cultures from different perspectives about clothing ideas and clothing styles , such as the course of history of development of Chinese and western costume, edited by Feng Zeming and Liu Haiqing, whose monographs just had a comprehensive discussions about it. Therefore, it can be concluded that the study of Chinese and western costume culture is still in its early stage, which has not formed a complete system in theory . However, the scholars’ study provides valuable reference for this paper.
The history of clothing is quite long. During the development of the clothing history, there are some similarities between Western and Chinese clothing culture. They are mainly on the same practical function, aesthetic function, regulating function and the social function. On account of the geographical environment and the historical traditions, the differences between Western and Chinese clothing culture are mainly from the selection of colors, the patterns, the materials, ideas and the way to wear clothes and so on. Chapter Two introduce the similarities between the Chinese and the Western clothing cultures, especially in daily life. Chapter Three introduce the differences between the Chinese and the Western clothing cultures, especially in different styles.
Chapter Two Similarities of Chinese and Western Clothing Culture
Although China and the Western countries located in different geographical environments, they are basically faced with the same or similar survival tests from the environments. As for each other’s clothing, they both had experienced from scratch, and then a rapid development.. Especially the basic needs of clothing, some similarities are shared startlingly.
2.1 Practical Function of Clothing
The practical function refers to the protection function to keep away from being too hot and too cold as well as the adaptation for humans’ all kinds of living activities when they face the harsh natural environment. (Zhang Bei, 2003) This is the most basic starting point for human survival. In the Warring States Period, King Wuling of Zhao prevailed over all dissenting views to “learn shooting on horse in Hu dress”, in order to suit the needs of war. What he did was to meet the needs of the war. In the age of cold weapons, no matter in China or in the Western countries, soldiers wore armors. Although those armors had different forms, their functions are the same. They all can protect their bodies on the battlefield. In modern times, China and the Western countries have produced modern military uniforms with a variety of protective colors (cryptic colors) to make cover. With their intelligence and wisdom, people can design a costume that fits for all occasions. Even the long trousers can become shorts, and short skirts can also become the coats. In this sense, although Chinese and Westerners have different ways to solve the problems, some similarities are shared startlingly.
2.2 Aesthetic Function of Clothing
Aesthetic function of clothing is one of the motive powers of humans’ dress . China has an old saying that“女为悦己者容”. It means that women uses decoration and clothes to beautify themselves to please the specific person whom they love. (Hua Mei, 2007) No matter in China or in the Western countries, in order to meet the various needs and objectives people will try their best to beautify themselves through clothing. In the past, Chinese considered the most beautiful part of women to be their feet with small sizes. Later, there came the foot binding cloth, three-inch “golden lotuses” and the foot binding culture lasted for a long time. The Westerners were very realistic to focus on women’s waists and buttocks. They produced underwear for shaping bodies such as waist corset which could make women’s waists’ smaller. Now, people’s aesthetic views have achieved a more perfect development.
